At Barkai Yeshivah High School, we are deeply immersed in the work of expanding the profile of our students’ competencies beyond academic achievement. We recognize that average performance scores represent only a small part of who each young adult is and seek ways of measuring and reporting additional facets of growth.

Using a series of carefully selected traits and dispositions that are strong predictors of personal success and leadership capacity, we identify each student’s top strengths, supported by specific evidence from their interactions throughout the year. We then aggregate that information to identify key strengths and write a summary narrative that becomes part of their report card. This has been used to create each student’s unique Barkai Profile.
 

In working through this process, we recognize each student for who they are as individuals and the non-tangibles that they bring to the Barkai community. It also allows us to put a thoughtful and conscious emphasis on character building, as we educate and nourish the whole child.

Hesed & Leadership

At Barkai Yeshivah High School, students are empowered to lead with purpose and serve with heart. Through a wide range of leadership and Hesed opportunities, our students develop responsibility, empathy, and a strong sense of community. Whether guiding peers, organizing school initiatives, or giving back through acts of kindness, Barkai students learn that true leadership is rooted in service.

 

Leadership Opportunities

Tefillah & Minyan Leadership  (מסדר/ת)

Students assist in organizing and supporting the needs of daily Tefillah and Minyan, helping foster a meaningful and respectful atmosphere for prayer.

 

Big Brother / Big Sister Program 

Upperclassmen serve as mentors to ninth-grade students, offering guidance, friendship, and support as they transition into high school life.

 

School Ambassadors

Represent our school with pride by welcoming prospective and incoming students, assisting during orientation events, and helping new students feel at home.

 

Israel Planning Committee

Collaborate with faculty and peers to plan the senior year Israel experience, from logistics to programming and community engagement.

 

A/V Squad

Support school-wide programs and events by managing audio and visual components, ensuring seamless presentations and performances.

 

Barkai B"M YouTube Channel Team

Contribute to our digital presence by filming, editing, and uploading videos that showcase school life and learning on the Barkai B"M YouTube Channel.

 

Fire & Safety Squad

Assist in maintaining safety protocols during drills and emergencies by ensuring the Sifrei Torah are protected and guiding students to safety in an organized manner.

 

Club Leadership

Students selected by faculty advisors help lead specific clubs, coordinating meetings, planning activities, and fostering student engagement.

Hesed Leaders

These students guide younger students in their hesed activities.  They hold orientations, debriefing sessions, and milestones to mark people's participation and celebrate our commitment to Hesed.

 

School Newspaper Leadership

Take part in producing our student newspaper through editorial and design roles such as Editor-in-Chief, Copy Editor, Layout Editor, Sports Editor, and Feature Editor in shaping the voice of our student community.

Student Government

The student body elects juniors to represent them. Student government works with the administration to bring programming to the school, anticipate ways to enhance student life and school spirit.  Student government liaisons to the administration in advocating for student concerns and representing administration concerns to the student body.

Senior Council

members are elected by the senior class to plan events for the senior class, raise funds for senior activities and liasion with the administration about the needs that are particular to the graduating class.

 

Shabbaton Committee

These students help prepare different activities on Shabbaton, ensure the fullest possible student participation, help with logistics of the shabbaton event.
 
Yearbook Committee

These students produce a yearbook that captures key moments of their high school experience and the ideals of the yeshivah and the community.  These students require creativity, interpersonal skills, communication skills, the ability to motivate the rest of the class to participate meaningfully in their yearbook.
 

Hesed Opportunities: 

Our Hesed program encourages students to engage in acts of kindness and community service, fostering compassion, responsibility, and a lifelong commitment to giving back. Students can participate in a variety of meaningful volunteer opportunities throughout the year. 

 

SBH Community Programs

Partner with Sephardic Bikur Holim to support our community through:

• Senior Visits - Bring warmth and companionship to elderly residents

• Tutoring - Provide academic support and to younger students

• Big Brother/Big Sister - Mentor and guide children, building positive and lasting relationships

 

Masbia Soup Kitchen

Assist in preparing and serving nutritious meals for individuals and families in need, promoting dignity and care through service.

 

CARE Initiatives

• Join programs designed to bring joy, mentorship, and celebration to children:

• Teen Boys Program - Connect with younger peers through shared learning and activities.

• Little Boys Program - Offer mentorship and friendship to children in the community.

• Birthday Party Program - Help plan and celebrate birthdays for children who might not otherwise have the opportunity.

 

Chai Lifeline

Support children and families coping with illness by volunteering at events and programs that bring hope, joy, and encouragement.

 

Special Children’s Center

Engage with children with special needs through interactive activities that promote inclusion, friendship, and empathy.
